Here are 10 tips to help you make the most of your first deep sea fishing trip in Kauai.
1. Choose the Right Charter Experience
Not all charters are the same. On Kauai’s leeward side, we’re known for calmer waters and quicker access to deep waters, which is perfect for first-timers. Choose a boat and crew with experience guiding beginners and families—you’ll feel more comfortable, and you’ll learn more along the way.
2. Dress for the Ocean, Not the Beach
It’s tempting to show up in board shorts and flip-flops, but you’ll be more comfortable in lightweight, moisture-wicking clothes and non-slip shoes. Bring a hat, sunglasses (with a strap!), and sunscreen. Kauai sun hits differently once you’re a few miles offshore.
3. Don’t Forget the Seasickness Prep
Even if you’ve never been seasick before, the open ocean can be a whole new game. Take motion sickness medication the night before and again the morning of your trip, especially if it’s your first time. It’s better to be safe than green.
4. Bring the Essentials
Here’s a quick checklist:
- Sunscreen (reef-safe is best)
- Sunglasses
- Refillable water bottle
- Light snacks
- Camera or phone (waterproof case recommended)
- Small towel
Most charters, including ours, provide gear, bait, and even fish cleaning—so you don’t have to worry about bringing your own tackle.
5. Trust Your Captain and Crew
Our crew knows these waters inside and out. Whether it’s helping you hook a big one or showing you how to reel it in like a pro, we’re here to guide you every step of the way. Ask questions, listen to safety briefings, and enjoy the learning experience.
6. Be Patient (The Fish Are Out There)
Fishing is part skill, part luck, and 100% patience. Sometimes the bite is hot right away; other times it takes a bit. Either way, just being out on the water and enjoying the beautiful views of Kauai offshore.
7. Know What You Can Keep
Different fish have different size and catch limits in Hawaii. Your Kauai captain will let you know what you can keep, what we release, and how we handle the catch. Our main goal is to offer to filet fish so you can enjoy a fresh local meal later that day or while here visiting the island!
8. Respect the Ocean and Wildlife
We’re lucky to fish in one of the most beautiful marine ecosystems in the world. We follow sustainable fishing practices and encourage all guests to respect marine life, avoid littering, and appreciate the beauty of Kauai’s ocean responsibly.
9. Capture the Moment
Whether it’s your first catch or just the look on your face when you spot a pod of dolphins, this trip will be packed with photo ops. Just be sure your camera or phone is protected from salt spray—and hold on tight if you snap that “fish on” moment!
10. Relax and Enjoy the Ride
Some of the best memories come when you’re not even holding a rod—watching the sun rise over the island, swapping stories with the crew, or just soaking in the ocean breeze. This is what Hawaii is all about.
